Helping a Friend Through Grief

Hi everyone. It’s been a while since I have written hasn’t it! This post is not related to food, but I needed to share this with you guys!

Last Sunday I came to church with the  hope of a good day! So we get there and I am waiting for my friends to show up when one showed up. I am not going to say her name because of privacy reasons so I’ll just call her… uhhhh… Her?

Well anyway normally she would have tackled me in a hug but she didn’t! ”Hey kayla, how are you?” she said with a forced smile.

”OK what’s wrong” I said bluntly.

“Oh, uhh, (sigh) One of my best friends just died of cancer! ”  She replied, holding back tears. 😦

Honestly I didn’t really know how to respond. So I did the first thing I thought of : I gave her a hug.

This is my advice on how to comfort your friend:

  1. Give them a shoulder to cry on.
  2. Let them know that you are there for them.
  3. PRAY, PRAY, PRAY!!!
  4. Ask if their friend was a Christian, if they were remind them about where they are, Heaven!  (If they weren’t do NOT under any circumstance say  that they are in hell because it will make it a lot worse!)
  5. PRRRRAAAAAAAYYYYY!
  6. Ask about what he/she was like.

Revelation 7: 15-17 says

“Therefore,

they are before the throne of God
    and serve him day and night in his temple;
and he who sits on the throne
    will shelter them with his presence.
16 ‘Never again will they hunger;
    never again will they thirst.
The sun will not beat down on them,’[a]
    nor any scorching heat.
17 For the Lamb at the center of the throne
    will be their shepherd;
‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’[b]
    ‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

 That verse really encourages me because, just imagining  that we’ll be in a place where there is no hunger, no pain, no tears, it’s just encouraging.
She told me how her friend died.
“She got cancer about a year ago, They put her on chemotherapy and hoped for the best. It seemed to work and eventually they took her of it. Maybe a week later she started going down hill fast. She died peacefully in her sleep.”
I think that people who die in their sleep are blessed. We all want to die peacefully, but that does not always happen. If you are a Christian, you do not need to be afraid of death,
because we know where we are going.rainbow
I wrote this the morning before I found out about my friend:
If you are blind, think about how the first face you may ever see will be Jesus’!
If you are deaf, think about how the first voice you may ever hear will be Jesus’!
If you can’t talk, think about how the first person you may ever have a conversation with will be Jesus.
If you can’t walk think about how the first person you may ever take a walk with will be Jesus.
                                     If you are a Christian, think of such things.
                      Thanks for reading! I really hope that I have encouraged you.

Kayla’s Creamy Potatoes

img_6507

These Smashed Potatoes go very well with steak and sautéed vegetables.

This recipe is modified from Rachael Ray’s Smashed Potatoes.

  • Makes 4 servings.

11 small potatoes

1/4 cup of sour cream

5 tablespoons of chopped chives

salt and pepper for better taste

  1. First, boil water with salt in it. While you are waiting for your water to boil, chop your potatoes into fourths  and add them to water. Boil for 10 min.

  2. Drain potatoes  and put them back in the hot pot (rhyme intended) and take a hand held electric mixer and mash ’em up.

  3. Add  sour cream, chives, salt and pepper . you can add other ingredients  like cheese, butter, and garlic.

                    Now eat, and enjoy! If you have any questions email me!

                    Remember that if someone tries to smash your dreams, don’t  listen to them! You can do anything through Christ Jesus!
